Wenger - Fabianski is a 'classy' stand-in

Arsène Wenger feels Lukasz Fabianski’s performance on Tuesday confirmed his capability to stand-in for Manuel Almunia over the next two weeks.

The Spaniard was forced off at Villarreal after 27 minutes because of an ankle injury and, afterwards, his manager suggested he may be sidelined for two weeks. That is a very long time at this stage of the season.

If Fabianski did play throughout the next fortnight he’ll be in goal for the Champions League Quarter-Final second leg, the FA Cup Semi-Final and the trip to Liverpool. However Wenger saw enough in Tuesday’s display to suggest he will cope well.

“I am very pleased at the way Lukasz came on,” said Wenger. “Despite not even being warmed up he made two great saves.

“I was just thinking after the game how important it is to have two classy goalkeepers. Unfortunately one of those classy goalkeepers does not get a great number of games. But if you don’t have two good keepers you don’t have [a] chance at this level.”
