Wenger - Golden Boot not linked to title glory

Manchester City 1-3 Arsenal

While Arsenal and Manchester United lead the race for the title, Emmanuel Adebayor and Cristiano Ronaldo are leading the race for the Golden Boot. So will the winner of the individual battle be holding the Premier League trophy in May? Arsène Wenger is not convinced.

The Frenchman is aware that the goals of Thierry Henry were vital to Arsenal's last two title successes while Ruud van Nistelrooy provided a cutting edge when United were top dogs in 2003. But as Wenger points out, that link does not always exist.

"The Golden Boot winner will not decide the title," he said.

"I’ve never found a correlation between the best goalscorer and the title. Sometimes I found a negative correlation. I can give you many examples of the guy who scores the most goals but his team doesn't necessarily win.

"When he starts to focus only on scoring goals, who pays the price? Most of all it’s the team. I can find plenty of examples of that."
