Wenger - Bad pitches scupper good football
Arsène Wenger does not believe that Wembley's pitch is good enough for top-level sporting events.
The Frenchman was critical of the national stadium's playing surface before and after Arsenal's FA Cup Semi-Final defeat against Chelsea on Saturday. Wenger described the pitch as an "embarrassment" and his comments were echoed by Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes a day later after Manchester United and Everton met at the same ground.
The new Wembley cost just shy of £800 million to build but, according to Wenger, it can not be regarded as a world-class venue until it has a pitch to match its impressive facilities.
"You will never see a good football match on a bad pitch. It is like that," said the Arsenal manager at his pre-match press conference.
"I just would think they should have to reconsider the whole structure of the pitch. At the moment they can relay it every three months and they will always have a bad pitch.
"It is not good enough for the Champions League Final, for the Olympic games, not for the Semi-Final of an FA Cup. Why? Because the first priority is that the pitch is good when you build a new stadium.
"If that is not right, the whole stadium is bad no matter how much money you spend."
